Steve Elmore, an original cast member of the musical Company, has died at the age of 84.

Elmore was in the casts of several Broadway shows from the 1960s to the 1990s, taking over leading roles from Jerry Orbach in Chicago and 42nd Street, and appearing in Jennie and Fade Out - Fade In, among others. In the first off-Broadway production of Dames at Sea in 1968, he starred opposite Bernadette Peters as Hennessy/The Captain, and on Broadway, he originated the role of Paul in Stephen Sondheim's Company.

A regular performer at the St. Regis Hotel's King Cole Room, Elmore also sang in tributes to Jules Styne, Sondheim, Jonathan Tunick, Howard Dietz, Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, George Abbott, and F.Y. "Yip" Harburg.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Marcell Elmore, son Stuart Elmore, daughter Stephana Sherwood, daughter Dr. Susan Elmore, daughter-in-law Michele Burdette Elmore, and four grandchildren.

A private memorial is planned for New York City in January.
