Bill and Dan Savage Set for March 9 fml: how Carson McCullers saved my life Talkback

Bill and Dan Savage will take part in a talkback following the Friday, March 9 performance of Sarah Gubbins’ fml: how Carson McCullers saved my life at Steppenwolf Theatre.

Dan Savage is author of the nationally syndicated sex column Savage Love, and co-creator of the ‘It Gets Better Project,’ a campaign to bring hope to gay teens struggling with bullying due to their sexuality. Bill Savage, Dan’s brother, is a Senior Lecturer in English at Northwestern University.

Gubbins’ play centers on a young woman in her junior year of high school in suburban LaGrange, Illinois, who discovers that she has unshakable kinship to John Singer, the central character in The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, and finds that she identifies even more with Singer and McCullers’ work after she is a victim of a gay-bashing incident.

Joanie Schultz has directed the production, which features Zoe Levin (Emma), Ian Daniel McLaren (Mickey), Lily Mojekwu (Ms. Delaney), Fiona Robert (Jo), and Bradley Grant Smith (Reed).
