Martha Graham Dance Company to Present Anne Bogart-Charles Mee Collaboration American Document in June

The Martha Graham Dance Company will present the premiere of American Document, a collaboration with director Anne Bogart and playwright Charles Mee, as part of the company’s series of shows at the Joyce Theater, June 8-13.

The piece is not a dance by Graham, but it is closely tied to one of her seminal works, American Document from 1938. Bogart uses six actors from her SITI Company and ten Graham dancers, with the text originating from a variety of sources from Walt Whitman’s poetry to blogs from American soldiers in Iraq. The work, which includes speaking and dancing by all the performers, probes the same issues as Graham’s original: what is an American? It was workshopped earlier this year at the Public Theater as part of the Under the Radar Festival.

The June performances will also feature the premiere of Dance is a Weapon, as well as the classics Appalachian Spring, Panorama, and Sketches from Chronicles.
