John Leguizamo was honored at P.S. 122’s annual spring gala, held at the The Abrons Arts Center, on Tuesday, May 4.
Carmelita Tropicana and Marga Gomez emceed the event. There were also live performances or presentations by Claire Danes, Hazelle Goodman, Lenny Kaye, Spike Lee, Baz Luhrmann (via video), Rosie Perez, Lucy Sexton, John Turturro, and the Wau Wau Sisters, as well as a video performance and tribute presentation by Eric Bogosian.
Among the attendees were stage and screen star Hugh Dancy, Tony-winning director Stephen Daldry, Obie winner Ain Gordon, drag king Murray Hill, PS 122’s current and former artistic directors Vallejo Gantner and Mark Russell, and PS122’s Director of Development Morgan von Prelle Pecelli.
Leguizamo began his career in the downtown performance scene, and developed his breakout solo show Spic-O-Rama at PS 122. The piece won him Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Awards, and went on to become an HBO special. His Broadway credits include the solo shows, Freak and Sexaholix, as well as last season’s revival of American Buffalo. The writer/performer earned an Emmy Award for the HBO presentation of Freak, and his film credits include Moulin Rouge, Summer of Sam, and To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar.
