Woody Allen, Christopher Plummer, Octavia Spencer, Meryl Streep Among 84th Annual Academy Award Winners

The 84th Annual Academy Awards were held on Sunday, February 26 in Los Angeles and aired live on ABC-TV. Tony Award winner Billy Crystal hosted the event.

The Artist took home five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Michel Hazanivicius and Best Actor for Jean Dujardin.


Acting winners included Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), Tony Award winner Christopher Plummer (Beginners), and Octavia Spencer (The Help).


Broadway veteran Woody Allen won Best Original Screenplay for Midnight in Paris; Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, and Jim Rash won for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Descendants; A Separation was named Best Foreign Language Film; and Rango was named Best Animated Film.


Other films that were honored included Hugo, which received five Oscars, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Iron Lady, and The Muppets.


Presenters and participants included 2011 Oscar winners Christian Bale, Colin Firth, Melissa Leo, and Natalie Portman, along with Meryl Streep, Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianaikis, Michael Douglas, Tina Fey, Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog, Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, Sandra Bullock, Bradley Cooper, Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Robert Downey, Jr., Morgan Freeman, Tom Hanks, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez, Milla Jovovich, Gwyneth Paltrow, Emma Stone, Owen Wilson, and Bridesmaids stars Rose Byrne, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Wendi Clendon-McCovey, Ellie Kemper, and Melissa McCarthy.


In addiiton, there were performances by Esperenza Spalding, and by Cirque du Soleil, featuring music by Iris composer Danny Elfman.
