The play is the final work in Wilson's 10-play cycle about 20th-Century African-American life in Pittsburgh's Hill District. Radio Golf, which is set in 1997, revolves around Harmond Wilks, a charming and powerful African-American politician, who must make a difficult choice that could ruin his career.
Radio Golf was named Best American Play by the New York Drama Critics Circle. It received four Tony Award nominations, for Best Play, Anthony Chisholm and John Earl Jelks as Best Featured Actor, and David Gallo for Best Set Design. Directed by Kenny Leon, the play stars Harry Lennix, Tonya Pinkins, and James A. Williams.
In his review of the production for TheaterMania, David Finkle wrote, "With his singular 10-play creation, August Wilson has gone out not with a whimper, but a bang."
