On the surface, Tomato Plant Girl a play for young audiences by Wesley Middleton, is a fantasy about a little girl who moves to a new town and becomes friends with a girl who enjoys being bossy. When the little girl meets an intriguing girl-creature who grows from a tomato plant, she must make a choice as to whom she would rather have as a friend. Suggested for students in first grade and up, Tomato Plant Girl asks audience members to consider how the choices we make effect our lives. The play also deals with the themes of sharing, self-confidence, conflict-resolution and peer bullying in an entertaining and humorous manner. The hour-long production, directed by drama teacher Candace Artim, ends with an opportunity for the audience to meet and ask questions of the teenaged cast. The ‘talk back’ will be led by a certified elementary school guidance counselor and will consider alternate endings to the play. It will last approximately 15 minutes.
