Works by Dan Dietz, GrooveLily, Lee Hall, et al. Part of TheatreWorks’ 2011-2012 Season

TheatreWorks in Palo Alto has announced its 2011-2012 season.

The year will begin with Fly By Night, to run July 13 – August 13. Conceived by Kim Rosenstock and written by Will Connolly, Michael Mitnick and Rosenstock, the romantic comedy, set during New York’s blackout of 1965 centers on a man who’s being ignored by his wannabe-starlet wife and attracted by her sweetheart sister. The show will be the centerpiece of the company’s ninth annual New Works Festival.

Also on the schedule is Roger Parsley and Andy Graham’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s portrait of two sisters’ love lives, Sense and Sensibility (August 24 – September 18); Dan Dietz’s look at rebuilding in post-Katrina New Orleans, Clementine in the Lower 9 (October 5-30); and Lucy Simon and Marsha Norman’s musical version of the classic children’s story The Secret Garden (November 30-December 31).

The lineup of shows that TheatreWorks will produce in the first half of 2012 includes Lee Hall’s look at British coalminers discovering their hidden artistic talents The Pitmen Painters (January 18 – February 12); Carly Mensch’s look at two historical re-enactors who find their lives blending with the characters they play, Now Circa Then (March 7 – April 1); John Steinbeck’s classic portrait of life during the Great Depression, Of Mice and Men (April 4-29); and a new musical from the pop-rock trio, GrooveLily, Wheelhouse (June 6 – July 1), which looks at a band whose attempt to economize backfires.
