2011 Barrymore Award Nominations Are Announced

The nominations for the 2011 Barrymore Awards, honoring excellence in Philadelphia Theater, have been announced. The winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held at the Walnut Street Theatre on October 3.

Among the most highly nominated productions is Sarah Ruhl’s In the Next Room, or the vibrator play, seen at the Wilma Theatre. Among its 12 nominations are ones for Outstanding Overall Production of a Play and Outstanding Ensemble in a Play. In addition, Blanka Ziaka received a nomination as Outstanding Director of a Play, and performers Jeremiah Wiggins, Alexis Distler, and Thom Weaver received individual nominations for their work in show.

Also nominated in the Outstanding Production of a Play category is Anna Deavere Smith’s Let Me Down Easy, seen at the Philadelphia Theatre Company, which received a total of six nominations, including ones for Smith and director Leonard Foglia.


The Outstanding Production of a Play category is rounded out by Delaware Theatre Company’s Around the World in 80 Days, My Wonderful Day, seen at the Wilma, and Theatre’s Exile’s The Lieutenant of Inishmore.

The works that have been nominated for the Independence Award for Outstanding New Play are Jacqueline Goldfinger’s the terrible girls< D.W. Gregory's Molumby’s Million, Michael Hollinger’s Ghost-Writer, and Tarell Alvin McCraney’s Run, Mourner, Run, as well as Our Show of Shows, written by David Ingram, Anthony Lawton, Jennifer Childs, and Dave Jadico.

In musical categories, the shows nominated for Outstanding Overall Production include two from the Arden Theatre Company — The Flea and the Professor and Threepenny Opera — as well as Miss Saigon (Walnut Street Theatre), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Theatre Horizon), and The Great American Trailer Park Musical (11th Hour Theatre Company & Montgomery Theater).

Among the many performers who have received nominations are Farah Bale, Melinda Chua, Charlie DelMarcelle, Jennie Eisenhower, Grace Gonglewski, Scott Greer, Dan Hodge, James Ijames, Damon Kirsche, Mel Sagrado Maghuyop, Rob McClure, Mary Martello, Kate Eastwood Norris, Stephen Schelhardt, Lavita Shaurice, Catharine Slusar, Ali Stroker, Leah Walton, and Greg Wood.

In addition, the winners of several noncompetitive awards have been announced, including Terrence McNally, who will receive the Barrymore Tribute for Distinguished Artist in the Theatre, and Harry Dietzler, executive and artistic director of the Darby Summer Stage, who will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
