Goodman Theatre artistic director Robert Falls has announced the theater's 2016-17 season, his 30th year at the helm. The season includes some of the hottest emerging voices of the American theater, as well as members of the Goodman’s Artistic Collective, which Falls established when he became artistic director in 1986.

The subscription season, which is newly expanded from eight to nine works, will open with the classic musical Wonderful Town (September 10-October 16), featuring music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and a book by Joseph A. Fields and Jerome Chodorov. Mary Zimmerman directs.

Halena Kays will direct a world premiere co-commission with Roundabout of Andrew Hinderaker's The Magic Play (October 21-November 20), Evan Cabnet will helm the Chicago premiere of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Gloria (January 14-February 19), and the Chicago premiere of Annie Baker's adaptaion of Uncle Vanya will be directed by Robert Falls (February 11-March 12).

Kicking off the spring will be the Chicago premiere Karen Zacarías' Destiny of Desire (March 11-April 16), directed by José Luis Valenzuela. Two more Goodman commission world premieres will be up next: Lauren Yee's King of the Yees (March 31-April 30), helmed by Joshua Kahan Brody, and Charles Smith's Objects in the Mirror (April 29-June 4), directed by Chuck Smith.

The season will close with Robert Falls' production of Eugene O’Neill's comedy Ah, Wilderness! (June 17-July 23), which will be a continuation of his career-long exploration of Eugene O'Neill.

The Goodman's upcoming nonsubscription offerings will include the 12th annual New Stages festival (September 21-October 9), the 39th annual production of A Christmas Carol, and the Second City’s Twist Your Dickens (December 1-31) by Peter Gwinn and Bobby Mort.
