New York City
The new production of the renowned Broadway musical begins this evening.
High Society, featuring music and lyrics by Cole Porter, makes its Philadelphia premiere tonight as it kicks off Walnut Street Theatre‘s 207th season.
Based on Philip Barry's 1939 stage comedy The Philadelphia Story as well as the 1956 film musical High Society, the show invites audiences to the wedding of the year. Tracy Lord, a wealthy socialite, is planning her lavish summer wedding, when her ex-husband arrives in an act of desperation to win her back. He isn’t the only one, however, who is taken in by the bride-to-be. Mike Connor, a charming tabloid reporter, who has been tasked with covering the nuptials, finds himself equally smitten. With the wedding drawing ever closer, the question becomes, whom will the bride choose? The musical features hit songs such as "Let’s Misbehave," "Just One of Those Things," "True Love," and "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"
The production features the classic music and lyrics of Cole Porter and book by Arthur Kopit. The cast includes Grace Gonglewski as Margaret Lord, Alex Gwynn and Cambria Klein as Dinah Lord, Megan Nicole Arnoldy as Tracy Lord, Dan Schiff as Uncle Willie, Paul Schaefer as Dexter Haven, Ben Dibble as Mike Connor, Jenny Lee Stern as Liz Imbrie, Jon Reinhold as George Kittredge, and Dan Olmstead as Seth Lord. Frank Anzalone directs.
The creative team includes Robert Andrew Kovach (set design), Mary Folino (costume design), Paul Black (lighting design), Will Pickens (sound design), and Douglass G. Lutz (musical and vocal director).
Performances will run through October 25.
