Geoffrey Rush (Exit the King) will star in and produce a new movie adaptation of the musical favorite The Drowsy Chaperone, according to multiple sources. Shooting is scheduled to begin next year.
In 2010, Rush starred in a Melbourne Theatre Company production of the play. He is best known for his film work, which includes roles in Shakespeare in Love, The King’s Speech, and the Pirates of the Caribbean series.
The Drowsy Chaperone features songs by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison and a book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar. The show pays tribute to a golden age of musical comedy as a lonely man imagines one his favorite shows coming to life while listening to its original cast recording.
