NBC has released a video from the April 23 episode of its hit series Smash featuring star Megan Hilty singing “Secondhand White Baby Grand,” a new song by Tony Award-winners Marc Shaiman and Scott WIttman.

Smash centers on the backstage drama behind a Broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe. Hilty plays Ivy Lynn, a Broadway chorus girl who is set on playing the lead role in the show.

In an interview with TheaterMania, Hilty discussed the song. “They actually wrote it a long time ago, and Ivy wasn’t supposed to sing it,” she says. “I remember when they played me the demo, I really wanted to do it. Afterwards, I told Marc and Scott, if it’s not something I’m singing, don’t play for it for me. But then it worked out in the script, and I’m so thrilled.”

Hilty will soon be seen in the New York City Center Encores! presentation of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Her Broadway credits include Wicked and 9to 5.
