The Ultimate Phantom of the Opera Bucket List

Before the long-running musical closes this winter, here are some things the super-Phans ”must” do.

As The Phantom of the Opera's time on Broadway comes to a close, it has once again become one of the hottest tickets in town, with patrons flocking to the Majestic Theatre to see Hal Prince's iconic original production one last time. For Phantom megafans – or "Phans," – the next couple of months may consist of crossing off any show-related bucket list items they have left.

If you wanted to do your own Phantom bucket list, we've compiled this list of common items to check off your agenda when you see the show again. Before February 18, of course. Because that's when the opera ghost disappears once and for all…right?

1. Sit under the chandelier
This one is a bucket list item not only for phans, but for general audiences, too. Whether someone has seen Phantom a dozen times or never before, it's safe to say that everyone wants to experience the thrill of the chandelier rising and falling right above them at least once. Tip: The best seats to sit directly under the chandelier are center orchestra, rows A to H.

2. Sit in a box seat
Although it's debated as to whether the Majestic Theatre actually has its own "Box 5," considering that the box seats are alphabetically labeled, sitting in any box is sure to be an immersive experience. Not to mention, you get a great view of the chandelier!

3. See both the principal Christine and the alternate Christine
Since its opening in 1988 on Broadway, Phantom of the Opera has always cast an alternate actress to perform the role of Christine twice a week, due to the demands of the part. Currently, alternate Julia Udine performs on Monday evenings and Saturday matinees, and regular principal Emilie Kouatchou goes on for the rest of the week's performances. Bonus points if you've somehow managed to catch a standby Christine (the current standby on Broadway is Kanisha Marie Feliciano).

4. See a Phantom-themed concert or cabaret
Whether it's at New York's 54 Below or Birdland, or your local nightlife spot, you'd be surprised how often there might be a Phantom-aligned theme for a performance. In the past, 54 Below has put on "The Four Phantoms in Concert," starring previous Phantom actors, and the venue also recently hosted long-running Phantom Hugh Panaro for a solo cabaret. Keep an eye on upcoming events at cabaret clubs and concert halls near you, because you never know who might come by.

5. Hunt for Phantom trinkets and treasures at the annual Broadway Flea Market
Phantom of the Opera typically has its own table in front of the Majestic Theatre…but even if in the years to come there is no longer a specific table dedicated to the toe shoes and prop letters and chandelier parts, you're bound to find some hot commodity from Broadway's longest-running musical. In years past, anything from props like Christine's wedding veil to custom hoodies previously gifted to cast members have been brought home by phans, and we don't expect that to change.

6. Have an at-home watch party of both the 25th anniversary concert film and the Australian filmed production of the sequel, Love Never Dies pro-shot
Don't shoot the messenger! We know Love Never Dies is controversial among phans, but you cannot deny that it's super fun to watch with friends. If you're trying to get any of your non-phan friends into Phantom, the 25th anniversary production starring Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess is a great start. Then, for those 21 and up, make a drinking game for watching Love Never Dies afterward.

7. Take a picture with the chandelier in view
Wherever you see Phantom, it's likely that during intermission, the chandelier – which has just crashed – will be seated onstage for a few minutes until the entr'acte begins. See if you can run up to the front of the orchestra to take a picture with it to cherish forever, then watch as it rises back up to the ceiling.

8. Take a picture outside of the theater with the marquee in view in your best Phantom-themed outfit
It's hard to believe that in just four months, the iconic mask will be removed from the marquee of the Majestic Theatre. Be sure to get a photo with it while you still can.
