The Hills Are Alive With The Sound of Music at North Shore Music Theatre

The Massachusetts regional theater presents the final collaboration of legendary songwriting team Rodgers and Hammerstein.

On Tuesday, June 11, the North Shore Music Theatre opened its production of the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music. Coming to the North Shore stage for the first time since 1989, the production is scheduled for two weeks of performances, running through June 23.

The Sound of Music originally opened on Broadway in 1959, winning five Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical. It was later revived at the Martin Beck Theatre in 1998, earning a Tony nomination for Best Revival. Based on a true story, the musical tells the love story of naval captain Georg von Trapp and Maria Rainer, a postulant at the Nonnberg Abbey who is sent to the von Trapp home to act as governess to Georg’s seven children. Set in Salzburg, Austria just before the outbreak of World War II, political upheaval colors the backdrop of their romance.

Directed and choreographed by James Brennan, the North Shore cast will be led by Lisa O’Hare (NSMT production of My Fair Lady) as Maria and Broadway veteran David Andrew Macdonald (Mamma Mia!) as Captain von Trapp. The cast will also feature Suzanne Ishee (Mother Abbess), James Beaman (Max Detweiller), Jacquelynne Fontaine (Elsa Schrader), Deidre Haren (Liesl von Trapp), Andrew Tighe (Rolf Gruber), Osborn Focht (Herr Zeller), Leigh Barrett, Bentley Black, Maureen Brennan (Sister Margaretta), Stowe Brown, Joy Franz (Frau Schmidt), Miranda Gelch, Leah Jennings, Mark Manley (Franz), Kevin B. McGlynn (Admiral von Schreiber, Baron Elberfeld), Cheryl McMahon (Sister Berte), Edward Miskie, Ellen Peterson, Meredith Swanson, and Dawn Tucker (Sister Sophia).

Young local performers will take on the roles of the von Trapp children, including 12-year-old Maggie Budzyna (Louisa von Trapp), 14-year-old Giacomo Favazza (Kurt von Trapp), 6-year-old Paige Catherine Martino (Gretl von Trapp), 14-year-old Kyle Mungenast (Friedrich von Trapp), 8-year-old Haven Pereira (Marta von Trapp), and 12-year-old Bryn Smith (Brigita von Trapp).

The creative team also includes Dale Rieling (music director), Jeff Modereger (scenic designer), Paula Peasley-Ninestein (costume coordinator), Michael Barnett (lighting designer), Charles Coes (sound designer), and Gerard Kelly (wig and hair design).
