You've probably never heard of the new Broadway musical Gettin' the Band Back Together. Beginning performances July 19 at the Belasco Theatre, the story of a recently fired fortysomething who…gets his band back together stars "actors you don't know" (excluding Taxi's Marilu Henner) and features "songs you've never heard."
Here, Henner and leading man Mitchell Jarvis tell us why you should see it anyway.
Featured in the cast are Kelli Barrett (Dani), Marilu Henner ("Mitch's Mom," a.k.a. Sharon Papadopolous), Mitchell Jarvis (Mitch Papadopolous), Jay Klaitz (Bart Vickers), Becca Kötte (Tawney), Garth Kravits (Ritchie), Tamika Lawrence (Roxanne Velasco), Manu Narayan (Dr. Rummesh "Robbie" Patel), Sawyer Nunes (Ricky "Bling" Goldstein), Noa Solorio (Billie), Paul Whitty (Michael "Sully" Sullivan), and Brandon Williams (Tygen Billows). The ensemble includes Ryan Duncan, J. Elaine Marcos, Rob Marnell, Jasmin Richardson, and Tad Wilson.
Directed by Tony winner John Rando, Gettin' the Band Back Together has music and lyrics by Mark Allen and a book by Ken Davenport and the Grundleshotz with additional material by Sarah Saltzberg. The creative team also includes Chris Bailey (choreography), Derek McLane (sets), Emily Rebholz (costumes), Ken Billington (lighting design), and John Shivers (sound design).
An earlier, developmental staging of Gettin' the Band Back Together opened at New Jersey's George Street Playhouse in 2013.
