Second Stage Theatre‘s upcoming off-Broadway production of Little Miss Sunshine is trading its Tony-nominated Wills. In the leading role of Richard Hoover, Will Swenson (Murder Ballad) will replace the previously announced Will Chase (The Mystery of Edwin Drood), who has departed the cast of William Finn and James Lapine’s new musical owing to other commitments. The show is set to begin previews on October 15, with an opening in mid-November.
Little Miss Sunshine premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2011 and follows the down-on-their-luck Hoover family as they travel 800 miles in a Volkswagen bus to a children’s beauty pageant so that youngest daughter Olive can participate. The production features Stephanie J. Block, Hannah Rose Nordberg, Rory O’Malley, David Rasche, Logan Rowland, Wesley Taylor, Josh Lamon, and Jennifer Sanchez.
The creative team includes Beowulf Boritt (scenic design), Jennifer Caprio (costume design), Ken Billington (lighting design), Jon Weston (sound design), Michelle Lynch (choreography), and Vadim Feichtner (musical direction).
