Sidd, a new musical adapted from the classic Herman Hesse novel Siddhartha, will begin performances at the Cherry Lane Theater on February 23. Featuring a score by Frank and Douglas Silver, the show will be directed by Andrew Frank. Casting will be announced shortly.

The production team includes Fran Kirmser (choreography), Maruti Evans (set design), Chris Dallos (lighting design), Michael Bevins (costume design), Andrew Bellware (sound design), and Ned Ginsburg (musical direction). Sidd chronicles a man’s extraordinary spiritual journey from his youthful wanderings in his home village through his encounter with the Holy Buddha, his many years living amidst the glamour, jazz and corruption of the City, and finally his enlightenment as a ferryman on a river.

Hesse’s novel was originally published in 1922. It was filmed in 1972, starring the Indian actor Shashi Kapoor in the title role. The character Siddhartha also appeared in Bernardo Bertolucci’s film Little Buddha, with Keanu Reeves playing the part.
