Our colleagues at The Village Voice have long shown their commitment to quality theater through sponsoring the annual OBIE Awards – and they’re continuing to display their discerning taste in their annual “Best of New York” issue, which has just been published.

Honors for Best Broadway Theater went to the recently (and beautifully) refurbished Belasco, while the Signature Theatre and HERE Arts Center were named Best Off-Broadway and Best Off-Broadway Theater respectively.

The always inventive Richard Foreman was lauded as Best Playwright, while the maverick young helmer Sam Gold was dubbed Best Director. (Indeed, one can’t wait to see what he will do next year with Wiilliam Inge’s Picnic for the Roundabout Theatre Company.)

Meanwhile, Laila Robins and Jeremy Shamos – no strangers to superlatives or constant empolyment – were the paper’s choices for Best Actor and Best Actress.
