Alan Cumming and Shirley Henderson will star in the American premiere of A History of Paper, running February 12-May 16 off-Broadway at Stage 42.

Written by Oliver Emanuel and Gareth Williams, and directed by Andrew Panton, A History of Paper is a new Scottish musical that follows a couple’s relationship through the paper artifacts that have defined their lives, from menus to postcards to love letters.

It is presented by Pitlochry Festival Theatre, for which Cumming serves as artistic director, and Dundee Rep Theatre, for which Panton serves as artistic director.

The production features scenic and costume design by Ana Inés Jabares-Pita, lighting design by Bruno Poet, and sound design by Alexandra Faye Braithwaite. The musical director is Gavin Whitworth.

“It’s a gentle, beautiful story with some cracking lines that the cast bring to life beautifully,” our critic at WhatsOnStage said of the Pitlochry engagement this past summer.

This marks Cumming’s first New York stage appearance since 2022, while Henderson makes her New York stage debut with the show.
