Rebecca Naomi Jones will join the cast of The Civilians’ This Beautiful City, currently playing the Vineyard Theatre, beginning with the March 7 performance. The production is scheduled to run through March 15. Jones replaces Marsha Stephanie Blake, who leaves the production to join the cast of the Broadway-bound revival of August Wilson’s Joe’s Turner’s Come and Gone.
This Beautiful City explores the growth of the evangelical Christian movement, and is centered around the mega-church movement in Colorado Springs. The piece is written by Cosson (who also directs) and Jim Lewis, with music and lyrics by Michael Friedman, based upon interviews by Emily Ackerman, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Brad Herberlee, Stephen Plunkett, Alison Weller, and the authors with actual people over the course of 10 weeks in Colorado Springs.
Jones was featured in the Off-Broadway and Broadway productions of Passing Strange, and was most recently seen at The Vineyard in Wig Out! The cast of This Beautiful City also includes Emily Ackerman, Brad Heberlee, Brandon Miller, Stephen Plunkett, and Alison Weller, along with musicians Chris Biesterfeldt, Benjamin Campbell, and Richard Huntley.
