Vassar College announced the lineup for Powerhouse Theater’s 40th anniversary season, June 18-July 26. Since 1985, Powerhouse has welcomed artists and students to the Vassar College campus.
This year’s lineup of workshops and readings includes Drew Droege’s comedic solo show Theater Idiot (June 18); the new musical Fanboy/Diva (July 17-19) by Cheri Steinkellner, with lyrics by David Zippel, music by Tony, Grammy, and Academy Award-winning composers Walter Afanasieff, Cy Coleman, Alan Menken, and Matthew Wilder, and direction by original Dear Evan Hansen cast member Will Roland; the third installment of episodes in progress of the Webby Award-honored podcast A Simple Herstory (July 24-26); Gianfranco Lentini’s Ocean Walk (July 2-5); Marielitos (June 27), a new musical about the Cuban Refugee Crisis of 1980; and Godfriend (July 10-12), written and performed by real-life couple Hal Cosentino and Ellenor Riley-Condit.
Rounding out the Powerhouse season are free readings of Lynn Rosen’s Legerdemain (June 19), Isaac Byrne’s Rita Hayworth and the Orson Welles Variations (June 20), Abe Johnson’s pits (June 26), Pete McElligott’s The Power of Something Invisible (June 28), and Genevieve Simon’s Punch Back (July 25).
Powerhouse will also host the Soundpainting Thinktank, a week-long gathering of artists from around the world, culminating in a one-night-only performance.
The Powerhouse Theater Training Company will present a slate of free theater throughout the season, including Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, adapted and directed by Elizabeth Dahmen, and Lope de Vega’s Fuenteovejuna, adapted and directed by Shaun Bennet Fauntleroy.
