Metropolitan Opera Announces 2010-2011 Season

The Metropolitan Opera has announced its 2010-2011 season.

Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher will direct a new production of Rossini’s comic opera Le Comte Ory, which will debut on March 24, 2011. The cast will feature Juan Diego Florez, Diana Damrau, and Joyce DiDonato. The production will feature sets by Tony winner Michael Yeargan, costumes by Tony winner Catherine Zuber, and lighting by Tony winner Brian MacDevitt.

Tony winner Nicholas Hytner will direct a new production of Verdi’s Don Carlo, with sets and costumes by Tony winner Bob Crowley. The cast will feature Roberto Alagna, Marina Poplavskaya, Simon Keenlyside, Anna Smirnova, and Eric Halfvarson.

Other season highlights will include Robert Lepage’s productions of Wagner’s Das Rheingold and Das Walkure, starring Bryn Terfel, Deborah Voigt, and Stephanie Blythe; Peter Stein’s production of Boris Godunov, starring Rene Pape; Peter Sellars’ production of John Adams’ Nixon in China, featuring choreography by Mark Morris; Willy Decker’s production of Verdi’s La Traviata; Julie Taymor’s production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute; and Mary Zimmerman’s productions of Rossini’s Armida, starring Renee Fleming, and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lamermoor, starring Natalie Dessay.
