Liesl Tommy directs Danai Gurira’s drama at the Public Theater.
The upcoming Public Theater production of Eclipsed, a new play by Danai Gurira that will star Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave), has been extended by one week. Originally scheduled to close November 8, the drama will now play through November 15.
Directed by Liesl Tommy, the work begins previews September 29 at the Public Theater, with opening night set for October 14. Eclipsed is a look at the Liberian Civil War from the perspective of the captive wives of a Liberian rebel officer. With the arrival of a new woman who can read, and the return of an old one who can kill, their possibilities are quickly transformed. Gurira, who stars on AMC's The Walking Dead, is also the author of the plays In the Continuum and The Convert.
Joining the previously announced Nyong'o in the cast are are Pascale Armand, Akosua Busia, Zainab Jah, and Saycon Sengbloh. The creative team includes Clint Ramos (scenic and costume design), Jen Schriever (lighting design), Broken Chord (original music and sound design), and Beth McGuire (vocal and dialect coaching).
