Katherine Kelly, Steve Pemberton, and Sophie Thompson will appear in Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer, which will play in the National Theatre’s Olivier Theatre beginning in January. Jamie Lloyd will direct the production.
The comedy centers on two well-bred young men who arrive at the country estate of Mr. Hardcastle, intending to woo his daughter Kate and her cousin Constance. But when local mischief-maker Tony Lumpkin plays a practical joke on the city slickers, the Hardcastle household is launched into a dizzying, deliciously preposterous romp of mistaken identity.
Kelly is perhaps best known for her portrayal of Becky McDonald on Coronation Street. In addition, she has appeared on stage in productions of The Accrington Pals, Othello, and Tamer’s Revenge.
Pemberton’s stage credits include The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and The Drowsy Chaperone. He is a member of the troupe League of Gentlemen, which has appeared on stage, television and film. Among his other television credits are Psychoville, Benidorm and Whitechapel.
Thompson won an Olivier Award for Into the Woods. Among her many other theater credits are Company, Measure for Measure and All’s Well That Ends Well. On screen, she has appeared in EastEnders, Gosford Park, Fat Slags, Nicholas Nickleby, Harry Potter, Emma and Persuasion.
