The prolific theatrical director will be honored by the Washington, D.C. mainstay.
Prolific theatrical director Julie Taymor will receive the Shakespeare Theatre Company's 2015 William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theatre. The award will be presented Sunday, November 1, at a ceremony at the Harman Center for the Arts Annual Gala.
Taymor is a Tony-winning, Oscar-nominated director whose productions include musicals (The Lion King), plays (A Midsummer Night's Dream, Grounded), classical operas (The Magic Flute), and films (Across the Universe, The Tempest, and Titus).
The "Will Award" recognizes artists who have made significant contributions to classical theatre in America. Past recipients include Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Diana Rigg, Fiona Shaw, Dame Judi Dench, and many others.
Under the leadership of artistic director Michael Kahn Shakespeare Theatre Company presents "theatre of scope and size in an imaginative, skillful and accessible American style that honors the playwrights’ language and intentions while viewing their work through a 21st-century lens.
