Starting this fall, Dartmouth will present a yearlong series of special arts initiatives, including artist residencies, newly commissioned performances, major exhibitions, and expansion of its art facilities to celebrate the 50th Anniversary season of Dartmouth’s Hopkins Center for the Arts (The Hop).

Winner of 16 Grammys, cello player Yo-Yo Ma will kick off the event on September 13. The creators of the Tony-winning War Horse, Handspring Puppet Company, will perform Woyzeck on the Highveld, a 19th century German play transported into a South African landscape. There will be two performances: September 21 and 22. Tony and Emmy award winner John Lithgow will perform Stories by Heart, a humorous one man show, on October13.

Wynton Marsalis is the first performer of the new year and will be presenting an evening of world class jazz on January 24, 2013. He is followed by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s presentation on March 1 and 2, which fuses many facets of American dance into one spectacular show. Finally, filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and composer Phil Kline introduce a modern baroque opera entitled Telsa: An Opera on April 5 and April 6.

Ongoing events include Public Art Installations, Festival of Film Festivals, and Cross-Disciplinary Arts Program.
