The American Repertory Theater at Harvard University has announced principal casting for the world premiere of Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles' and Jessie Nelson's new musical Waitress, based on the motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly. The production will feature direction by A.R.T.'s Diane Paulus (Finding Neverland) and choreography by Chase Brock (Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark).

In Waitress, which will run August 2-September 27 at the Loeb Drama Center with an opening night on August 19, Jenna (Jessie Mueller) is a waitress and expert pie maker who is stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. When a baking contest in a nearby county offers her a chance at escape, Jenna must weigh her commitments against a rare shot at freedom and recognition.

The cast includes Tony winner Mueller (Beautiful — The Carole King Musical) as Jenna, Jeanna de Waal (Kinky Boots) as Dawn, Drew Gehling (On a Clear Day You Can See Forever) as Dr. Pomatter, Dakin Matthews (The Audience) as Joe, Keala Settle (Les Misérables) as Becky, and Joe Tippett (Airline Highway) as Earl.

The creative team will include set design by Scott Pask, costumes by Suttirat Larlarb, lighting by Ken Posner, and sound by Jonathan Deans.
