Film star Terrence Howard and Tony Award winners Anika Noni Rose, James Earl Jones, and Phylicia Rashad will star in the upcoming Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, to be directed by Debbie Allen. The show will begin performances at the Broadhurst Theater on February 12, with an official opening scheduled for March 6. Additional casting will be announced soon.
Williams’ play searingly portrays a dysfunctional Southern family, including Maggie “the Cat,” (Rose) her alcoholic husband, Brick (Howard), and his parents, the dominating family patriarch, Big Daddy (Jones), and his wife Big Mama (Rashad).
This will be the show’s fifth Broadway production, including the original 1955 production starring Ben Gazzara, Barbara Bel Geddes, and Burl Ives. There have also been numerous film and television versions, most notably with Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor.
The creative team will include Ray Klausen (sets), Jane Greenwood (costumes), and William Grant (lighting). Allen is well known as a choreographer for stage, film, and television, having won many awards for her work. As an actress, she is also a two-time Tony Award nominee for West Side Story and Sweet Charity. She and Rashad, who originally performed under the name of Phylicia Ayers-Allen, are sisters.
