Cudia, Foote, Smith, Sun, et al. Win 2008 Jeff Awards

The winners of the 40th annual Joseph Jefferson Awards, honoring the best in Chicago-area Equity theater, were announced last night at a ceremony at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater led the field with four wins for its production of The Comedy of Errors, for Production of a Play – Large, director Barbara Gaines, Ron Wells’ adaptation, and Ana Kuzmanic’s costumes. The company also won an ensemble award for its production of Funk It Up About Nothin’.

Among the notable acting winners, Hallie Foote and Lois Smith won for their performances in the Goodman Theatre’s production of The Trip to Bountiful, while John Cudia and Richard Todd Adams won for their work in the Marriott Theatre’s Les Miserables, which also received awards for Production of a Musical – Large, and director Dominic Missimi (who tied with Jim Corti for Sweet Charity at Drury Lane Oakbrook).

Additional winners included Nilaja Sun for her solo No Child…, at Lookingglass Theatre Company; Dennis DeYoung’s Hunchback of Notre Dame at Bailiwick, which won for Production of a Musical – Midsize; Chicago Dranatists’ A Steady Rain which received awards for Production of a Play – Midsize, playwright Keith Huff for “New Work,” and actor Randy Steinmeyer; and Northlight Theatre’s Ella, which won for revue, director Rob Ruggiero, and actress E. Faye Butler. A special award was given out to Apple Tree Theatre founder Eileen Boevers for Outstanding Achievement.
