New York City
TheaterMania critic Zachary Stewart will moderate a discussion with the playwright and director.
January 2014 decidedly did not feel like summer. That doesn't mean we can't dream of a shockingly balmy winter during which change reverberates through the atmosphere, as Cori Thomas has in When January Feels Like Summer, which is making its New York City debut at Ensemble Studio Theatre in a coproduction with Page 73 Productions. Thomas will participate in a talkback about the play alongside director Daniella Topol following the 7pm performance on Friday, May 30. TheaterMania critic Zachary Stewart will moderate.
Set in Central Harlem, When January Feels Like Summer traces the paths of five New Yorkers as they intersect in surprising ways. Touching upon issues of race, class, sexuality, and gender identity, the play is a microcosm of urbanity and the unexpected lessons we learn from our neighbors.
When January Feels Like Summer comes to New York after making its world premiere at Pittsburgh's City Theatre Company in 2010. Debargo Sanyal (Invasion!) stars as Indira (a role he originated in Pittsburgh), a transsexual immigrant from India. One of the questions raised by the play: When you are a woman who was born a man, what obligation, if any, do you have to disclose that information to a partner? When is the best time to do that, and how?
The discussion will also include a brief Q&A, so this is an opportunity to pose your questions to the creative team.
