Company XIV will present the world premiere of Le Serpent Rouge, a dance-theater satire conceived, directed, and choreographed by Austin McCormick, to run May 15-June 6.
The piece enacts the story of Adam, Eve, and the fall of man, fusing dance, theater, music and visual art. It draws inspiration from Jean Cocteau’s one act play Le Bel Indifferent, Adam and Eve by John Erskine, the poetry of Charles Bukowski, Disillusionment by Thomas Mann, and The Bible (with adapted text by McCormick). The production has an eclectic musical score featuring songs by Paul Anka, Cecilia Bartoli, James Brown, Eartha Kitt, Peggy Lee, Marilyn Monroe, Arvo Part, and Nina Simone.
The cast will feature John Beasant III (Adam), Laura Careless (Eve), Yeva Glover (Lillith/Serpent), Gioia Marchese (Ringmistress/Devil), and Davon Rainey (Drag Queen/Serpent). The design team will include Zane Philstrom (set design), Olivera Gajic (costume design), and Gina Scherr (lighting design).
