Carrie Fisher to Present Her Mother, Debbie Reynolds, With SAG Life Achievement Award
Stage and film actress Carrie Fisher, who brought stories of her dysfunctional Hollywood upbringing to Broadway in her one-woman show Wishful Drinking, will present her mother — the legendary Debbie Reynolds — with the SAG 51st Life Achievement Award at the 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. The ceremony, which will be simulcast live on Sunday, January 25, on TNT and TBS at 8pm EST and 5pm PST, will be the centerpiece of the union's annual celebration.
SAG-AFTRA will honor Reynolds for her achievements as both a performer and humanitarian. Past recipients of the Life Achievement Award include Rita Moreno, Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Ernest Borgnine, Betty White, James Earl Jones, Charles Durning, Julie Andrews, Shirley Temple Black, James Garner, Karl Malden, Clint Eastwood, Edward Asner, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, Sidney Poitier, Kirk Douglas, Elizabeth Taylor, Angela Lansbury, Robert Redford, and George Burns.
Reynolds, who celebrates 66 years in show business, became a staple of movie musicals throughout the 1950s and '60s, appearing in a series of classic films including Singin' in the Rain, The Singing Nun, and The Unsinkable Molly Brown, which earned her as Oscar nomination. Throughout her career, she has starred in more than 50 motion pictures as well as two Broadway shows. In 1983, she closed out the run of the musical comedy Woman of the Year and earned a Tony nomination in 1973 for her performance in Irene, in which she performed alongside Fisher. Her stage career also includes touring productions of Annie Get Your Gun, Woman of the Year, and a revival of The Unsinkable Molly Brown.
Fisher and Reynolds' erratic relationship was most famously immortalized in Fisher's novel and film, Postcards From the Edge, starring Shirley MacLaine and Meryl Streep. Yet despite the ups and downs that have publicly plagued their relationship, the mother-daughter team is "still here" and Fisher will honor the woman who first introduced her to the world of Hollywood song and dance.
