Urie will depart the off-Broadway production in March to embark on a national tour.
The hit off-Broadway solo comedy Buyer & Cellar has announced a new leading man to take over for Drama Desk Award winner Michael Urie at the Barrow Street Theatre while Urie launches the show's national tour. Broadway alum Christopher J. Hanke will step into the starring role of Alex More, an unemployed actor who gets the unusual job of manning Barbra Streisand's personal shopping mall, which is located in her basement.
Hanke will begin performances on Tuesday, March 18, while Urie prepares to make his first tour stop at Chicago's Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Palace from May 6-June 15. Urie will then perform at Washington, D.C.'s Harman Center for the Arts from June 20-June 29, followed by a six-week engagement at Los Angeles' Mark Taper Forum from July 9-August 17.
Hanke's Broadway credits include Rent, In My Life, Cry-Baby, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Written by Jonathan Tolins and directed by Stephen Brackett, Buyer & Cellar recouped its initial investment faster than any other off-Broadway show in recent history. The production had its world premiere at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in April 2013 before transferring to the Barrow Street Theatre in June 2013.
