Beauty and the Beast's Bill Condon to Direct New Stage Version of A Star Is Born

A new stage musical inspired by the 1954 motion picture A Star is Born is in the works, Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures has announced. Academy Award winner Bill Condon, whose cinematic reimagining of Beauty and the Beast hits theaters on March 17, will helm the production, which is currently in early development. A timeline will be announced in the coming months.
The story of a young ingenue taken under the wing of a former matinee idol in 1950’s Hollywood, the musical will feature songs from the film by Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin, including "The Man That Got Away" and "Gotta Have Me Go With You." This adaptation is exclusively inspired by the 1954 film starring Judy Garland and James Mason, and not the upcoming Warner Bros. film with Bradley Cooper and Lady GaGa.
Condon made his Broadway debut with the 2014 revival of Side Show. Along with Beauty and the Beast, his films include Chicago, Dreamgirls, and Gods and Monsters. Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures will be represented on Broadway this season with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Other titles in development for the stage include Beetlejuice, Dave, Dog Day Afternoon, Night Shift, and 17 Again.
