TMU contributor and senior at Hofstra University

While attending Hofstra and living in New York, I have had the opportunity to keep an eye on the changes in marketing and advertising, especially in the theater industry. The worlds of marketing and theater are constantly transforming, and staying well informed of the most current industry news is very important. I have a whole list of publications that I read every day to educate myself on all of the current theater and marketing trends!

Two major publications that I read daily to stay updated on the most current marketing and theater industry trends are the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. As a marketing major at Hofstra, a small portion of our tuition goes towards a personal subscription to the Wall Street Journal. I take full advantage of this resource because I feel that staying cognizant of the current state of the economy and current marketing developments is imperative to being a successful marketer. The New York Times also has a section dedicated to the arts and is a fantastic source for recent theater news and reviews. The Arts section of the New York Times doesn’t only cover theater, but also television, movies, music, and more!

Another source I use to stay updated is my social media accounts! Following certain accounts on Twitter and Facebook is sometimes the best way to find the most recent updates regarding marketing and theater! My favorite Twitter accounts with the most frequent updates are @TheaterMania, @nytimestheater, and @adage. Advertising Age (AdAge) is a publication dedicated to analyzing marketing and advertising tactics used today by companies and organizations. Through these twitter accounts, I am able to be constantly aware of the most recent news and current marketing movements. It’s very interesting to see how the most recent advances in marketing are used in the theater industry!

One publication that was introduced to me at my TheaterMania internship is 4A’s SmartBrief. This publication is an important tool for anyone involved in business and is a fantastic source for top stories in the marketing industry. Everyday SmartBrief sends email-blasts with the top stories as well as tips and tools to better market yourself or your company. Many current stories involve making sure you’re using your time wisely on social media and marketing through Facebook.

The publications that I check multiple times daily are the theater news websites, including TheaterMania. These sites are frequently updated with top stories, casting notifications, opening and closing performance notifications, and more! I have been checking these sites everyday since I was a freshman in high school. I am sure that my knowledge of the theater industry is extensive as it is due to these wonderful sources. Being aware of the advancements in marketing and advertising has not only helped me in class but in my extracurricular involvements as well. Although checking these sources may seem tedious, if you make it a part of your daily routine it will become easy and highly beneficial. Without these publications, I wouldn’t be nearly as educated as I am regarding theater and marketing news, and I highly recommend all of these sources!

Quote of the Week:

“I’d rather be nine people’s favorite thing than a hundred people’s ninth favorite thing.”
