The Obie Award-winning play begins performances tonight.
Appropriate, which won the 2014 Obie Award for Best New American Play, starts tonight at SpeakEasy Stage Company.
The play takes place on the Lafayette family’s dilapidated Arkansas plantation. Following the death of their patriarch, the whole family reunites to mourn the loss and settle the estate. Waiting for them amid the furniture, junk, and memories is a gruesome secret. The discovery they make forces them all to confront the family’s dark past, as the play both embraces and subverts a classic American genre.
Written by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and directed by M. Bevin O’Gara, the show features Bryan T. Donovan as Bo, Katie Elinoff as Cassidy, Tamara Hickey as Rachael, Melinda Lopez as Toni, Brendan O’Brien as Ainsley, Alex Pollock as Franz, Eliott Purcell as Rhys, and Ashley Risteen as River.
The creative team includes Cristina Todesco (set design), Tyler Kinney (costume design), Wen-Ling Liao (lighting design), Arshan Gailus (sound design), and Adele Nadine Traub (stage manager).
Performances will run through October 10.
