The Geffen Playhouse has announced four of its five productions for its 2009-2010 season.

The season will kick off with the world premiere of Blair Singer’s Matthew Modine Saves the Alpacas (September 8-October 18), a satire about celebrity humanitarianism starring Modine as himself. It will be followed by Bill Cain’s Equivocation (November 10-December 20), which proposes that King James hired William Shakespeare to dramatize the story of Guy Fawkes Day.

In 2010, Annette Bening will star in Randall Arney’s production of Joanna Murray-Smith’s The Female of the Species (February 2-March 14), about a feminist author who is taken hostage by a former student. It will be followed by Gilbert Cates’ world premiere production of Jonathan Brielle’s musical Nightmare Alley (April 13-May 23), based on the 1946 novel about a young carnie couple who tempt the hand of fate, and Laurence Fishburne recreating his role as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in George Stevens Jr.’s Thurgood (June 27-August 8).
