Andre De Shields will receive the “Living Legend” award at the opening gala for the 2009 National Black Theatre Festival, to be held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on August 3. The festival runs through August 8.
DeShields received Tony Award nominations for Play On! and The Full Monty. He was recently seen on Broadway in Impressionism and Off-Broadway in Archbishop Supreme Tartuffe. He will be playing the role of Teiresias in the Shakespeare in the Park’s upcoming production of The Bacchae, and will be workshopping his solo piece, Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory: From Douglass to Deliverance at The Yard in Chilmark on Martha’s Vineyard, September 4-7. He will then travel to Atlanta to star in David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre, directed by Robert O’Hara at the Alliance Theatre, October 28-November 15.
