The Broadway musicals Spring Awakening and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee have each received $5,000 New York Education Grants from the League of American Theatres and Producers to use for their 2007 educational initiatives.

Spring Awakening has teamed up with StudentsLive for a program that targets groups including high school students and education leaders; it includes exercises that address the issues in the show, including sexual identity, health, and peer pressure.

Spelling Bee is initiating a new program entitled “Broadway Bee,” which will introduce students to in-class exercises inspired by the format of the musical. The program will utilize teaching artists in the classroom to work with teachers and students to create their own spelling bee.
