Peter DuBois will direct the New York premiere of the play version of Manuel Puig’s novel Kiss of the Spider Woman, which will bow on Broadway during the 2008-2009 season. Additional details will be announced at a later date.

The play, set in an Argentinian jail in 1976, tells the story of two unlikely cellmates, Molina, a homosexual window dresser, and Valentin, a heterosexual revolutionary, who form an intimate bond. The play was staged in London in 1985 in a translation by Allan Baker, which will be used here; it was also made into an Oscar-winning feature film and a Tony Award-winning 1993 musical.

DuBois will take over as artistic director of the Huntington Theatre in Boston later this year. His New York stage credits include Jack Goes Boating and Measure for Pleasure, for which he won the SSDC’s Callaway Award.
