London's Evening Standard Award Winners Announced logo

The winners of the 2003 Evening Standard Awards for excellence in London theater have been announced. Michael Frayn's Democracy won the award for Best Play, marking the sixth time that a Frayn work has taken that honor. A complete list of winners follows.


Best Actor:
Michael Sheen, Caligula

Best Actress:
Sandy McDade, Iron

The Carlton Television Award for Best Musical:
Jerry Springer: The Opera

The Sydney Edwards Award for Best Director:
Polly Teale, After Mrs Rochester

Best Stage Designer:
Christopher Oram, Caligula

The Charles Wintour Award for Most Promising Playwright:
Kwame Kwei-Armah, Elmina's Kitchen

Outstanding Newcomer:
Tom Hardy, Blood and In Arabia We'd All Be Kings

Special Award:
Max Stafford-Clark

The Patricia Rothermere Award:
Lord Richard Attenborough, for his support of young actors
