Keely Smith, Mario Cantone, Maude Maggart, and Others To Receive MAC Awards in April 25 Ceremony at Symphony Space
Singing legend Keely Smith, actor-comedian Mario Cantone, jazz greats Kenny Baron and George Coleman, and newcomer Maude Maggart have been announced as winners of major awards from MAC (the Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs), which they will accept in a ceremony to be held on Monday, April 25 at Symphony Space, beginning at 7:30pm. Awards will also be presented that evening to yet-to-be announced winners in 19 other categories.
Don’t Tell Mama’s Sidney Myer and comedian Angela La Greca will emcee the event. Scheduled presenters and performers include Broadway veterans Patti LuPone, Sara Ramirez, André DeShields, KT Sullivan, Karen Mason (who is nominated for Major Engagement), and Ann Hampton Callaway (who is nominated in three categories: Recording of the Year, Song of the Year, and Special Musical Material of the Year).
Keely Smith is set to begin a three-week run at Feinstein’s at the Regency on April 19; she will receive the organization’s Lifetime Acheivement Award. Cantone, who starred on Broadway earlier this season in his one-man show Laugh Whore, will be given the MAC Board of Directors Award for Comedy. Barron (who is on stage at Dizzy’s Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center most of this month) and Coleman have earned the Board of Directors Award for Jazz. Maggart, now performing her newest show on Monday nights at the Oak Room at the Algonquin, has been named as recipient of the annual Time Out New York Award; she is also nominated in the New York Female Debut category.
Among the more than 50 nominees for 2005 MAC Awards are cabaret favorites Lisa Asher, Phil Geoffrey Bond, Steven Brinberg, Barbara Brussell, John Bucchino, Christopher Denny, Natalie Douglas, Barbara Fasano, Tommy Femia, Rick Jensen, Mark Nadler, Alex Rybeck, and Chuck Sweeney.
