Benjamin Millepied to Choreograph Metropolitan Opera and Juilliard School’s The Bartered Bride

Benjamin Millepied, who choreographed and appears in the current film Black Swan, will choreograph the The Metropolitan Opera and The Juilliard School co-production of Bedrich Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, to be presented in Juilliard’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater, February 15-20. James Levine conducts the Juilliard Orchestra in this new production by director Stephen Wadsworth.

The production features a new English language translation by J.D. McClatchy, commissioned by the Met, with scenery by Thomas Lynch, costumes by Martin Pakledinaz, and lighting by Peter Kaczorowski. The creative team will collaborate on a larger production of The Bartered Bride in a later season at the Met.

The cast will include Layla Claire as Maienka, Paul Appleby as Jeník, Alexander Lewis as Vašek, Jordan Bisch as Kecal, Joyce El-Khoury as Esmeralda, Jennifer Johnson as Ludmilla, Renée Tatum as Háta, Noah Baetge as the Ringmaster, Donovan Singletary as Krušina, Alexander Hajek as Mícha, and Elliot Madore as an Indian.
