2005 Drama Desk Award Nominations Announced

The nominations for the 50th annual Drama Desk Awards, which honor achievement in the New York theater on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway, were announced this morning at the New York Friars Club by Robert Goulet (currently appearing on Broadway in La Cage aux Folles) and Lynn Redgrave (soon to begin performances on Broadway in The Constant Wife).

Monty Python’s Spamalot received 12 nominations, the most of any show this year. Two other new Broadway musicals, The Light in the Piazza and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, respectively received 11 and 10 nominations. The Off-Broadway musical Altar Boyz received seven and Matthew Bourne’s Play Without Words six, while the musicals Dessa Rose and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Doubt each received five nominations.

The awards will be presented in a ceremony to be held at the LaGuardia Concert Hall on May 22, hosted by Harvey Fierstein (Fiddler on the Roof). The complete list of nominations follows:
