Billie Joe Armstrong to Play St. Jimmy in Film Adaptation of American Idiot

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong will play the role of St. Jimmy in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical, American Idiot, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Michael Mayer, who directed the stage show, will also be directing the movie, which is planned to premiere in 2013. The film is being developed by Tom Hanks’ Playtone Productions.

The book to the musical version of American Idiot was co-written by Mayer and Armstrong, based upon the songs from Green Day’s album of the same name. The musical won the 2011 Grammy Award for “Best Musical Show Album,” two 2010 Tony Awards, a Drama Desk Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award, among other honors.
