Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) will present its eighth annual New Original Works Festival, September 8-24.
This year’s three-week festival will launch eight new projects over three consecutive programs. Week one of those productions will include Marissa Chibas: Clara’s Los Angeles, in which a disoriented flapper awakes after a wild night at the Ambassador Hotel, in 1926, to find she has danced her way into a new century; Edward’s House of String, a modern fable from puppeteer Cindy Derby; and Actual Reality by Lucky Dragons, featuring a score played by an ensemble of acoustic musicians distributed throughout the theater.
The second week will feature Robert Cucuzza’s Cattywampus, a backwoods reinvention of August Strindberg’s classic Miss Julie, and dance-theater divertissement Layla Means Night, choreographed by Rosanna Gamson for her company World Wide.
The final week of the festival will include Zoophilic Follies, a new puppet opera that probes the mythic mind of Daedalus, by ensembles Tandem & Timur and the Dime Museum. In addition, dancer Michel Kouakou will perform a powerful solo that connects the everyday to realms of the unknown, the dark, and the dead entitled Daara Dance: Sack, and nine dancers will present Award-winning choreographer Victoria Marks’ Smallest Gesture/Grandest Frame, which sets the intimacy of the small gesture against a larger canvas of collective action.
