Adam Shankman to Direct Hollywood Bowl Production of Hair
Emmy-nominated director and choreographer Adam Shankman will direct the Hollywood Bowl's upcoming production of Hair, which will stage only three performances, on August 1, 2, and 3.
Shankman recently directed and choreographed film adaptations of the Broadway musicals Hairspray and Rock of Ages. He has directed episodes of Glee and Modern Family, helmed the star-studded comedic short film Prop 8: The Musical, and produced the Step Up films.
After opening at the new Public Theater in 1967, Hair made its Broadway premiere in 1968 and defined the "rock musical" with its celebration of hippie counterculture. The tuner features book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot. The popular score includes a number of hit songs, such as "Aquarius," "Good Morning Starshine," and "Easy to Be Hard." Hair's 2009 Broadway revival won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical.
