Francesca Zambello will direct Tchaikovsky’s rarely staged The Tsarina’s Slippers for Britain’s Royal Opera House, according to a report in Reuters. The production will run November 20 – December 8 at Covent Garden.

The opera, based on Nikolai Gogol’s short story Christmas Eve, debuted in 1876. It tells the story of a blacksmith who attempts to woo a beautiful but fickle young woman. She will only marry him if he brings her the Tsarina’s own slippers from the court of Catherine the Great, and so he enlists the help of the Devil to gate-crash a ball in St. Petersburg and bring his beloved what she desires. The production will use a company with members from both the royal opera and ballet companies, which share the Covent Garden premises.
