The Marriott Theatre's production of Sister Act starts tonight.

Based on the Whoopi Goldberg film of the same name, the musical tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer and diva whose life changes radically when she becomes the key witness to a crime. For her own protection, she is taken to a convent where her identity is concealed by convincing everyone she is a nun. At odds with the rigid lifestyle and the high-strung Mother Superior, Deloris finds solace in joining and eventually leading the church choir. With her big personality she overhauls the church and community, but just might blow her cover in the process.

The musical features a score by Tony, Grammy, and Academy Award-winner Alan Menken, with lyrics by Grammy Award-winner Glenn Slater. Don Stephenson makes his directorial debut at The Marriott Theatre with the show, and musical direction is overseen by Doug Peck, while Melissa Zaremba provides choreography. The cast is composed of Stephanie Umoh as Deloris Van Cartier, Hollis Resnik as Mother Superior, Jonathan Butler-Duplessis as Eddie Souther, Lillian Castillo as Mary Patrick, Don Forston as Monsignor O’Hara, Mark Hood as TJ, Todd Horman as Joey, Mary Robin Roth as Mary Lazarus, Jason Slatery as Pablo, Tiffany Tatreau as Mary Robert, and Byron Glenn Willis as Curtis Jackson.

The creative team includes Tom Ryan (set design), Nancy Missimi (costume design), Jesse Klug (lighting design), Bob Gilmartin (sound design), Sally Weiss (properties design), and Patti Garwood (musical supervision).

Performances will run through April 3.
